MIJAS

INFO & HISTORY
Much of the interest in Mijas revolves around the town's long and colourful history. And yes, it truly is one of unique interest. Mijas has seen a long succession of kingdoms and rulings. The Tartessians of the Turtedani tribe are believed to be the first settlers in the area. When they left, the Phoenicians and the Greeks took over. Some say that it was during that period that Mijas' precious ores and mines were put to waste. The Romans inherited the town, shortly after. At that time, known as Tamisa or Jamisa, the Romans considered the place as an important trading point because of its close proximity to the road that connected Malaga and Cadiz, two vital commercial centres. Mijas then went under the ruling of the Moors, then two more kings who made it a part of their respective independent kingdoms. And, after that, Catholic kings stepped in and added to the town's rich history. Archaeological findings confirm that settlements have indeed previously existed in Mijas before contemporary times. So, if there's one sure thing to be said about its history, it is that the different groups and civilizations who were once inhabitants of the town definitely contributed to Mijas' culture and traditions.
Mijas is divided between the coastal area (Mijas Costa) and the hill area (Mijas Pueblo). Mijas Costa is a 12 kilometre coastal stretch of modern (post 1960) tourist orientated development including the popular La Cala de Mijas (Mijas cove) and Sitio de Calahonda (a large residential estate) within the municipal district of Mijas. Mijas Costa is located between Fuengirola and Marbella, being at least 10km away from the village of Mijas and having to pass through Fuengirola to get between one and another leads to some confusion. Mijas Pueblo is the historical core of the municipality of Mijas.
La Cala de Mijas is a friendly and welcoming village. Its clean and well-kept beaches, as well as the parks and children’s play areas, mean that it attracts families, whilst its shops, restaurants and leisure facilities mean that many retirees choose to call the village home. Mijas Pueblo attracts tourists from all over the world, because it is such a fascinating place to visit. The village is considered to be the birthplace of the ‘donkey taxi’ and you will regularly see tourists on the street on the colourfully robed backs of these magnificent yet humble creatures. There are now over 60 donkey taxis in the village, and you can expect to pay 15 euros per ride. This is a great symbol of Mijas and its ability to blend traditional Spanish lifestyles and cultures with the modern amenities that an international community would expect.
Mijas, located on the western side of Costa del Sol, enjoys a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild winters. Mijas and the entire Costa del Sol are serviced by modern highways, both toll and public, like the AP-7 and the scenic N-340 that follows the coastline. These will take you anywhere you want to go, surrounded by stunning mountains and Mediterranean scenery.
